IIT Madras Launches New Program to Boost Women Leadership

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has introduced the ‘Women Leading IITM’ (WLI) program to improve women’s leadership in science and technology. The institute said that the program will make donations each year to promote women technologists’ careers. The inaugural grants will be issued March 8, today, to caption International Women’s Day.

IIT Madras said that the Institute is aiming to boost the USD million endowment by the end of 2021, which will give annual grants to support programs taken by women faculty, students, and researchers.

Highlighting the factors of this program, Prof. Ligy Philip, Dean (Planning), IIT M, mentioned that the ‘Women Leading IITM’ is a well-thought-out ambition by IIT Madras, with assistance from IITM Foundation, to develop and support, facilitate women talent at IITM. This program will benefit the women talent of IIT Madras to exceed in their fields and come out as S&T leaders.

Objectives of the women Leading IITM program will be to boost the percentage of women faculty in assistant professorships to 20 percent from the current 15 percent, among others.

$2 MILLION TO BE RAISED BY IIT M TO NURTURE WOMEN FACULTY

IIT Madras Director Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi mentioned that the program will be a powerful catalyst that will diminish hurdles encountered by women students, faculty, and staff at the institute and encourage them to accomplish their full potential.

Board Member of the IIT Madras Foundation, Rohini Chakravarthy, said, at IITM, women have been a minority but there have been many outstanding leaders among them over the years. The alumni of IITM felt that they could support their alma mater by settling in place a series of grants that honor reasonable leaders among staff, students, and faculty and catalyze programs that encourage women to thrive at IITM.
